The 7 Cs of CoolSculpting® in Charlotte: Eliminate Fat with Sona Dermatology & MedSpa

There is nothing more frustrating than spending months in the gym, only to find that you can still pinch that stubborn bit of unwanted fat. You don’t want to undergo surgery, but you know that diet and exercise will only go so far for tough areas. CoolSculpting®—a non-invasive procedure that destroys fat cells without anesthesia or long recovery times—targets those areas quickly.

Sona Dermatology & MedSpa is one of the top five CoolSculpting providers in the country. Our expertise allows you to shape and contour your body in a safe and convenient manner. With several locations throughout the Charlotte area, the answer to eliminating fat is just a few steps away. Schedule a free consultation today.

Here’s what to expect with the seven Cs of CoolSculpting in Charlotte.

1. Cooling: The Science of CoolSculpting

You don’t need to go under the knife to remove fat cells. In fact, you can freeze them.

CoolSculpting is an innovation in cosmetic dermatology that uses an applicator set at a temperature cold enough to crystallize (freeze) and destroy fat cells without damaging the skin, nerves, blood vessels, or muscles. Once fat cells die, they are absorbed in the body and removed by the liver. This freezing method of removing unwanted fat is generally referred to as cryolipolysis.

In 2017 alone, over 208,000 cryolipolysis procedures were performed—more than radio-frequency, laser, and ultrasound treatments for fat reduction. More people are confident in cryolipolysis and CoolSculpting than ever before.

How Cold is the Procedure?

CoolSculpting is quite cold, but only cold enough to kill fat cells. The cold plates on the machine’s applicator do not directly touch the skin, so you don’t need to worry about any superficial damage to the skin (i.e. frostbite). In fact, the machine has a built-in safety feature that automatically turns the machine off if something outside of the norm happens.

What Areas are Targeted?

CoolSculpting targets the most difficult areas for weight loss, such as the lower stomach, upper arms, and the “banana” roll found on the back of the thighs. Our Charlotte CoolSculpting treatments at Sona are currently FDA approved for the following areas:

FDA Approved Areas for CoolSculpting

  • Abdomen
  • Flanks (love handles)
  • Back roll and bra strap region
  • Inner thigh
  • Outer thigh
  • Knees
  • Upper arms
  • Chin/submental area

Depending on your personal goals, you should expect to receive multiple treatments to see the desired results in each area.

Does It Hurt?

You won’t need local anesthesia to undergo the treatment as you would with a potentially painful procedure, such as liposuction or a tummy tuck. CoolSculpting has a very low pain level even compared to other non-invasive, fat-reduction techniques.

Procedure Pain Level
High-intensity ultrasound High
Unipolar radiofrequency Medium
Cryolipolysis (CoolSculpting) Low

What are the Possible Side Effects?

You should expect only minor side effects from CoolSculpting treatments. These side effects usually subside within a few hours to a couple weeks.

Common side effects:

  • Redness
  • Bruising
  • Swelling
  • Stinging or tingling
  • Numbness
  • Dizziness

Most importantly, CoolSculpting is a safe procedure that lacks the risks associated with surgery and anesthesia, such as bleeding, infections, scarring, and more serious complications. Researchers have not found any adverse events when running serum lipid tests or liver tests after cryolipolysis. Furthermore, experts believe that it is safe for multiple cycles of CoolSculpting treatments in the same day, especially for the abdomen and flanks.

2. Claims: The Benefits You’ll Get

As long as you are willing to continue a healthy lifestyle, the results you’ll achieve from CoolSculpting in Charlotte should last. Excess fat cells are gone for good, however, remaining fat cells can still expand if you choose to maintain a poor diet. Long-term results are up to you.

CoolSculpting Is Truly Effective

Is CoolSculpting too good to be true? With its minimal pain, easy treatments, and broadness of approved areas, it can seem as though CoolSculpting is as good as a deceptive weight loss pill and other “miracle cures.” Fortunately, CoolSculpting works and looks natural. And, it has the data to back it up.

In a study of 48 patients who received cryolipolysis in the “saddlebags” or outer thighs:

  • Results showed an average loss of 1 inch of fat (in circumference) in the first 3 months.
  • Patients lost an average of 1 additional inch just 6 months after treatment.
  • Overall, patients gradually lost 28% of subcutaneous fat near the hip area in 3 months.
  • 90% of those patients then said they would recommend cryolipolysis to friends.

As with any cosmetic procedure, results can vary from patient to patient. Not all patients will see the same results as outcomes will be affected by factors specific to their body and treatment objectives.

3. Comeback: The Fastest Recovery

One of the reasons CoolSculpting has gained so much popularity is because of its fast recovery time. There is virtually no downtime for a treatment—schedule an appointment for your lunch break and continue your normal activities immediately, like going out with friends, playing with your kids, or attending a Carolina Panthers game.

Sona CoolSculpting Treatment and Post-Treatment

Similar to the recovery time, our Charlotte CoolSculpting procedures at Sona are also quick. Treatment and post-treatment recovery can be completed in three easy steps, so you can be in and out of the office at your convenience. Steps include:

  • Check-in—After arriving at a Charlotte-based Sona center for your appointment, check in at the front desk. A medical provider will then escort you to the treatment area to change into a treatment garment and will be able to answer any questions regarding the procedure.
  • Treatment—The provider will begin treatment by applying the CoolSculpting device to the desired areas. The treatment will start off very cold, but the area will be numb after 5–10 minutes. During this time, you can read, snack, or do work on your laptop. Treatment sessions normally last 1–3 hours, depending on how many areas are being treated. Each treatment area takes about 45 to 60 minutes.
  • Post-treatment—The nurse will massage the treated area for a few minutes after each treatment. You are then free to continue your day.

After treatment, your body will continue to do the work for you. Expect up to four months for optimal results, though you will begin to see a change in the first one to three months.

There is virtually no downtime for a treatment—schedule an appointment for your lunch break and continue your normal activities immediately.”

4. Candidates: Is This Treatment Right for You?

Not everyone is a perfect candidate for CoolSculpting. When deciding on treatment, you should be honest about your personal goals. Are you looking to lose weight overall? Or are you looking to lose a reasonable amount of fat in specific areas?

The right candidate for CoolSculpting in Charlotte is at a healthy or average weight with pockets of unwanted fat. Those who deal with obesity or excessive adipose tissue (fat tissue) will most likely not see the dramatic results that they want. Someone who hopes to lose 50 or even 20 pounds should not try CoolSculpting, because it is not a weight loss plan. If this is the case, surgical procedures, diet and exercise, or alternative treatment plans should be considered.

Another consideration should be skin tightness. The tighter your skin, especially at the targeted area, the more natural and smooth the results will be once the fat is gone. Excess or loose skin can be a real concern when freezing a substantial amount of fat, as a sudden loss of fat can spotlight the appearance of loose skin.
